Boston College Athletics

Eagles for Life

Often referred to as the “front porch” of Boston College, Athletics plays a significant role in the mission and spirit of the University, while complementing its intellectual and spiritual life. BC student-athletes demonstrate intensive self-discipline, motivation, and heart, excelling not only as competitors, but also as advanced and committed scholars. BC prides itself on equipping student-athletes for life after college, whether that takes place in a locker room, a boardroom, or beyond.

Be a Champion of Champions

Led by William V. Campbell Director of Athletics Blake James, BC Athletics envisions broad-based success equivalent to the University’s overall ranking. Yet building and sustaining a high level of success in athletics depends on donor support.

Philanthropy will enable Boston College to offer more scholarships, recruit and retain coaching talent, provide facilities that match lofty ambitions, and ensure an exceptional student-athlete experience. Accordingly, Soaring Higher: the Campaign for Boston College aims to exceed $400 million for BC Athletics.

Student-Athlete Scholarships

In an ever-evolving national college sports landscape, scholarships remain the most important tool a coach can deploy when recruiting a student-athlete. At most institutions, including BC, the gap between the cost to attend and available scholarship dollars continues to widen—the University’s student-athlete scholarship budget has risen to $30 million, and the BC endowment covers less than half.

An increased number of endowed and current-use athletics scholarships will simultaneously fill this gap and fulfill the University’s mission of providing a world-class education for student-athletes.

Coaching Endowments

The best coaches have a multiplier effect on their programs. In addition to teaching X’s and O’s, they play a pivotal role in the success of a student-athlete, guiding their personal and athletic development every day.

Endowing head and assistant coach positions is crucial; it signals a dedication to recruiting, retaining, and rewarding leaders who will advance the tradition of excellence at the Heights. Endowments can also help fill out a coaching staff with strength and conditioning specialists, position-specific coaches, and nutritionists, or assist in scouting and recruitment efforts.

Facilities

Athletics facilities are a physical manifestation of a university’s commitment to a thriving athletics program. At Boston College, they are a top priority. On the Chestnut Hill, Brighton, and Newton campuses, enhancements include locker rooms, player lounges, sports medicine and strength and conditioning spaces, fields, and equipment storage.

Further investments in essential training and competition spaces will help put our student-athletes and coaches in the best position to compete for conference and national championships. In addition, enhancements to facilities improve the game-day experience and can lead to greater fan support in the future.

Special Funds

Special funds—such as the Athletics Director’s Competitive Excellence Fund, the Strategic Initiatives Fund, and the Flynn Fund—enhance BC’s ability to keep pace with the fast-moving college sports landscape, ensuring that our athletes have the resources to be successful at the Heights, to compete in their conferences, and to shine a positive light on the University.

When urgent department, programmatic, or student-athlete needs arise in the midst of a season and outside of the standard operating budget, William V. Campbell Director of Athletics Blake James relies on these funds to address them.

James Blake

“For many of our donors, there are two fundamental reasons they support our programs: the first is BC’s Jesuit, Catholic mission, which calls us to achieve high standards of academic rigor and character development in addition to athletic excellence. The other is our student-athletes; they continuously impress us all with their drive, passion, and commitment.”
